- Commissioned by the San Francisco Choral Artists. The melody of is that of Susani, an early German carol dating from the 14th century. Its role as a lullaby seemed clear from the beginning: “eia” means “hush” and the name, susani, is low German for ‘suse Ninne’ or “sleep, little child”.
